Salary Range: $61,859.20 - $94,785.60

GENERAL PURPOSE

Performs a wide variety of fire fighting duties related to protecting life and property of City residents. The Firefighter Engineer has an overall responsibility for firefighting equipment, apparatus and pump operations. As well as supervisory responsibilities, command functions and running of the station in the absence of the Fire Captain.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

These are intended to be accurate summaries of what the job classification involves and what is required to perform it. Employees are responsible for all other duties as assigned.

  • Covers the Captain when he/she is on leave
  • Operates pumps and aerial devices on the Fire Apparatus
  • Operates the Fire Apparatus during an emergency response
  • Supervises crews operating in a IDLH environment, when the Captain is not present
  • Functions as Incident Commander in the absence of the Captain
  • Command and understanding how to manage MCI incidents
  • Review incident reports
  • Clean and service assigned apparatus, maintaining it in a condition of readiness
  • Perform required apparatus maintenance, cleaning duties, inventory checks and weekly inspections.
  • Understands and operates Accountability System;
  • Responds to fire alarms and extinguishes fire;
  • Responds to calls for emergency medical services, and renders first aid;
  • Performs salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water and removing debris;
  • Responds to and renders assistance in emergency cases;
  • Cleans and inspects equipment and apparatus after returning from a fire;
  • Inspects equipment and apparatus and notifies superior officer of any defects;
  • Makes minor repairs to equipment and apparatus, performs routine preventative maintenance tasks, and keeps records of such action;
  • Keeps fire station, equipment and grounds in a clean and orderly condition;
  • Participates in training activities and instruction sessions;
  • Acquires and retains a thorough knowledge of the City, including streets, buildings, water supply, unusual hazards and related items;
  • Performs various public information or education tasks;
  • Enters inspection, training and (on occasion) fire and emergency medical service calls into the records management systems;
  • Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies and procedures;
  • Respond to specialized situations such as hazardous materials, confined space, extrication and technical recues that may include high and low angle, swift water, trench and collapse rescues;

2. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Working knowledge of fire fighting methods, techniques, and procedures; fire fighting equipment types and varieties and their most appropriate and effective use; equipment and maintenance and care; state and city codes, laws, and regulations, and ordinances related to fire prevention; fire vehicle equipment; emergency medical techniques and procedures and first-aid; interpersonal communication skills.

Ability to follow detailed verbal or written work instruction; work in dangerous emergency situations; perform strenuous physical labor; communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; assimilate modern fire prevention and fire fighting skills; perform under extreme weather conditions; work on-call and on-shift work; develop effective working relationships with supervisors, fellow employees, and the public. Has a deep understanding of the city, as per locating of addresses and general hazards.

3. Special Qualifications:

Must possess a valid Driver License.

Must be State Firefighter I and II certified.

Must be Utah Advanced EMT.

Must be Hazmat certified in Awareness and Operations Levels

Must be Apparatus Operator

Must be Apparatus Aerial Operator

Must be Fire Inspector I or Company Officer Inspector within 1 year

Must complete Wildland Firefighter I within 1 year

Must Complete Fire Officer I within 2 years

Must Complete Command Training Center level 1 within 1 year

Must Complete Command Training Center level 2 within 2 years

Preference will be given for heavy rescue certifications.

4. Work Environment:

Functions of the position generally performed in a controlled environment, but subject to all seasonal and weather extremes. Emergency response travel expected in normal course of performing duties. Many functions of the work pose high degree of hazard uncertainty. Physical readiness and conditioning may be a condition of job retention. Various levels of mental application required, i.e., memory for details, emotional stability, discriminating thinking, creative problem solving; and continuous use of motor skills.

FLSA AND AT-WILL STATUS

This position is non-appointed and is entitled to protections of Utah Code 10-3-1105. As such, the Firefighter Engineer-AEMT shall be entitled to due process appeal authority as set forth in Utah Code 10-3-1106.

The Firefighter Engineer-AEMT position is a non-exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
